A RETURN OF THE MULBERRY ICON

Posted on by Cameron Tewson

The It bag. There has been many loosely named this since the term was coined in the 1990s, all when the luxury handbag market started to boom and bags were status symbols decorating the arms of celebs and the real girl who saved and scrimped until she had enough to purchase one to dangle proudly from the crook of her arm, wrist, or shoulder.

But – only four bags that seemingly hold the title if both ‘it‘ (oh.. and ‘icon‘) – CHANEL’s 2.55 flap bag, Hermes Birkin, Balenciaga’s Motorcycle and fourthly, Mulberry’s iconic Alexa Bag. The noughties It-girls will be pleased that the iconic Alexa returns. The bag that was so popular (and even named recession proof) was named after quirky British TV presenter, Alexa Chung whom was frequently photographed with a vintage Mulberry Elkington briefcase by her side – all in which got Mulberry’s design team thinking. With a love for Alexa Chung’s cool laid-back effortless style, the Alexa bag was born.

Fast-forward 10 years since its inception, iconic British brand Mulberry (who is also celebrating its 50th birthday) has relaunched the most-desired silhouette Alexa with some with some strong sustainable credentials to make it relevant now, more than ever.

For the re-launch the bag is now made with leather from gold-standard, environmentally accredited tanneries and has been crafted at the brand’s carbon-neutral UK factories, all of which reflect the brand’s commitment to responsible innovation – and giving the iconic style a new sustainable finish that reflects where the fashion world is today.

To add to its appeal the new colour palette ranges from tranquil, earthy neutrals (Charcoal, Chestnut, Chalk), to joyful neon shades to light up the festive season (Neon Pink and Neon Yellow) and key hues of the signature Mulberry palette (Mulberry Green, Deep Amber and Black).

As with the original Alexa collection, a trio of sizes is available, with the classic silhouette complemented by youthful Mini and bold Oversized styles.
