RALPH LAUREN CELEBRATES FIFTY YEARS OF DESIGNING DREAMS

Fashion designer Ralph Lauren marked 50 years in the business with a celebrity-filled gala runway show in Manhattan’s Central Park.
Hollywood stars Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain rubbed elbows under the stars, as they sipped wine alongside journalist Anderson Cooper, media titan Barry Diller, director Steven Spielberg and Lauren’s fellow designers, Diane von Furstenberg and Tommy Hilfiger. Also on hand to pay tribute to Lauren were brand name powerhouses Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart, as well as fashion world doyenne Anna Wintour.
While the celebrity guests probably couldn’t care less about the actual collection on show, the location and star-studded venue was a backdrop to a truly traditional iconic Ralph collection that held strong western influences. Touches of suede jackets, plaid lumberjack shirts and lots of denim dominated the first half of the show. Given Ralph and wife Ricky have a ranch in Colorado this was a strong inspiration for the American designer.
As the runway filled with model after model, the later half of the collection taught us how to pair the cosy-meets-all-American coolness that combined flashes of sequins finished with cable-knit sweaters. On-point tailored tweet jackets and dungarees were also on show for the man.
The Polo brand, which has enjoyed a resurgence of late (thanks to the demand for logos and fashion ticking the 90s nostalgia box) was well represented, as was Ralph Lauren sport, ski and scholar chic.
