FIVE MINUTES WITH… PAMELLA ROLAND

Posted on by Cameron Tewson

I sit down with the Queen of of New York Fashion Week, Pamella DeVos – also known as Pamella Roland to discuss the brand, latest collection and why she loves British Fashion.

CT: Can you tell me more about your collection and inspiration for this season?

PR: For this season I wanted to emulate the feeling of being in Bali. All the gorgeous colors and lush landscape and of course the ocean views. You’ll find that our palate is very bright, and all the pieces would look spectacular against a Bali beach sunset.

CT: How do you and the team forecast and plan for the season ahead?

PR: No matter what season we always are thinking about our customer and what did and didn’t do well on the sales floor. We also take into consideration certain styles that buyers might be asking for as well as finding ways to incorporate one off pieces we may have done for the red carpet into the next collection.

CT: Why did you pick the show location?

PR: We have been showing at Chelsea piers for a few seasons now and we just love it. The space is great and the general layout of the studios really caters to our needs. It has a lot of backstage space which is amazing for our sponsors and VIPS.

CT: Who is the Pamella Roland girl and can you describe the her in three words?

PR: I think the great thing about our brand is that really anyone can wear it. The designs are diverse and no matter what your style you can find something in our collection that works for you whether it be sexy, timeless or both!

CT: Name three celebrities you would like to wear Pamella Roland whom have not yet?

PR: I don’t like to single out certain celebrities but I would say that I am a huge fan of Kate Winslet, her style is always impeccable and she is so talented. I’m also very fond of Meghan Markle. She has taken on her style role flawlessly and I’d love to see her in the suit from our new collection. I recently watched Amy Adams in Sharp Objects and I just loved her performance–it would be amazing to have the opportunity to dress her for the awards season.

CT: How did you start in the fashion industry?

PR: My whole life I was always really into clothes. When I was 15 I went to work for a clothing store, and I was there for seven years. I have always been very much into the arts, but my father encouraged me to get my business degree. Now I am able to express my creative side while also utilizing my business education and background.

CT: Since you started out, how do you think the culture of fashion has changed?

PR: Fashion always evolves but social media has really propelled things forward in a way we never thought possible. So much information is available so quickly and images are up almost instantly when it comes to runway shows and red carpet that as designers we constantly have to be one step ahead and finding new and creative ways to connect with our customers and fans.

CT: What is next for the brand?

PR: We are always looking to evolve and grow. We continue to open more stores in new markets domestically and internationally each season, which is very exciting.  Our brand has a lot of momentum right now, so we are looking at various ways to keep the brand moving forward.

CT: As I am British, I have to ask an American designer; what do you think of British fashion?

PR: I’ve always loved British fashion and sensibility. There is a certain refinement and old worldliness about it but at the same time there is also edge and innovation in designs that never ceases to amaze me.
